Elementals can be defined as unseen intelligences who inhabit the four elements—air, earth, fire and water. These natural spirits are thought to possess supernatural powers and are usually invisible to humans, save those possessing the psychic ability of clairvoyance. The belief in their existence was almost universal in the ancient world and still exists today in many cultures who believe that all things, objects and places possess conscious life.
On hiking trips in the remote wilderness of Norway, my husband Paul and I have had repeated experiences that subtly defy the logical explanations of traditional science. Two summers ago in the Jotenheimen mountains we met a Swedish scientist who, in a matter-of-fact tone, described his interactions with Elementals in the remote Brangsdal valley. He explained these ‘energy forms’ were more apt to show themselves in rarefied places where the ‘veil’ between this world and the next is most thin. The next day we set out, topographical map in hand.
